Ann Deal, “the breeder of The Breeders”

Kim Deal has been talking a lot about her mom, Ann, in her promo for her just-released solo album. For example, “Are You Mine” is inspired by an encounter Kim had with her Alzheimers-stricken mom where she asked Kim, “Are you mine?” (i.e., “are you my child?”).

Because the Deal sisters had a longstanding relationship with WOXY, the WOXY archive contains a few very cool tidbits from their mom, Ann. First, there’s this station ID where she calls herself “the breeder of The Breeders.” This played on air in the early 90s, when she would on occasion fill in on The Breakfast Show as a guest co-host. I remember her being funny and having a sense of humor.

That sense of humor comes through in this interview afternoon DJ Dave Tellmann did with her, published in the April 1994 edition of the WOXY newsletter. She discusses her thoughts on the twins’ music, her musical contribution to Last Splash, and what she really thinks about Frank Black.
